Volunteer FAQ
Tips to ensure expectations are aligned
What discounts do volunteers receive?
Volunteers receive a 90% registration discount. This discounted registration includes tuition, meals throughout the event, and a tenting spot. Estimated volunteer total = $150-$200.
How long should volunteers except to work?
Volunteers can expect to work 3-4 hours, with a total of three shifts per day. These shifts are typically in the mornings after breakfast, afternoons before/after lunch, and evenings after dinner.
Can volunteers still participate in the program?
We aim to schedule working shifts in a way so that volunteers can participate in the majority of the program, so that they too can experience the powerful practice of Huichol shamanism.
What are the accommodations?
We offer a free camping spot on the retreat grounds. Camping together creates a strong sense of community – and you can be among the first to choose your spot!
When do we review applications?
In general, we review applications from November through September. We receive a high volume of applications, so please bear with us as we take the time to review each one carefully.
What are the primary volunteer responsibilities?
The main volunteer duties are focused in the kitchen and communal areas. Basic duties include:
- Meal clean up (scrubbing pots/pans, breaking down the buffet)
- Meal prep (washing and chopping vegetables)
- Cleaning dining tables
- Taking out the trash
- Cleaning and tidying communal spaces
- Chopping and hauling firewood
We also ask for help setting up our outdoor event spaces before the Retreat begins, and/or breaking down at the end of the Intensive (for those who join).
What qualities do we look for in our volunteers?
Each year, we assemble an amazing group of volunteers. We look for the following qualities in any applicants:
- Open-minded and compassionate
- Team-playing attitude
- Hard-working and shows up ready to go!
- Comfortable with hot days and working in the sun
- Interest in Huichol shamanism (although no experience is necessary)
