Eligio Carrillo V.

Passed away Dec. 3, 2023

Eligio Carrillo passed away at sunset on December 3, 2023 in his village, surrounded by family after celebrating his birthday the day prior.

As a mara-akame (shaman) of the Wixáritari (Huichol tribe), Eligio dedicated his life to the people of his village and tribe. His visionary artwork through the medium of traditional yarn paintings impacted thousands of people around the globe. The vivid imagery from Eligio’s dreams and visions helped to communicate intricate experiences of the spirit world. The ancient stories of creation came alive within his art and the powerful energy imbued within the strands of yarn pressed into the beeswax radiated into any space his paintings were placed. Eligio’s vision will live on through the art he shared with the world.

Eligio’s family carries on his legacy as an artist. Many of his children have studied the traditional tribal art forms and are accomplished artisans, continuing the ancient practice of bringing visions alive through the medium of art.

If you would like to support his family and village, please make a donation below.

Since it’s founding, the Dance of the Deer Foundation has been closely connected with Eligio. The energy from his artistic creations has played an integral role in creating the spaces for profound spiritual transformation at our events. We are so tremendously grateful for his contribution to the world, and we will be forever inspired by his vision.

Message from Brant

Eligio and I went through our apprenticeships with Don José Matsuwa together. We became brothers! Compañeros (comrades) on the path of the mara-akame (shaman). We sat together during countless ceremonies, our voices melding together as the ancient chants echoed through the mountains. We walked together on pilgrimages to lakes and caves and to Wirikuta so many times. We have been so deeply connected for so long now.

It is hard to think that we won’t be making any more memories together in this life my brother. I miss you terribly already. But I know that you are on your journey now and I wish you the most beautiful visions as you transition into the light.

Thank you for all we shared in this lifetime!

Your brother,
Brant (Ricardo) Secunda
