Brant Secunda — Huichol Indian Shaman and Healer

The Huichols Today

In the early 1990’s when a road encroached upon doña Josefa’s family village, Brant arranged for the village members to make the unprecedented return back into the Sierra Madre Mountains. Here, the Huichols are able to preserve their traditional lifestyle and sacred art traditions. The Dance of the Deer Foundation purchased boats, rented trucks, and provided the supplies necessary for the move. Through these and other efforts by Brant Secunda, families are not separated by work on tobacco and coffee plantations and industrial chemical exposure problems are eliminated.

Don José valued the importance of education as a means to preserve the Huichol language and traditions. Moreover, he emphasized fluency in the Spanish language and Mexican culture so that his people would be able to conduct business when visiting Mexican towns and so that the Huichols could become effective ambassadors in political matters. Inspired by this insight, Brant directed the Dance of the Deer Foundation to fund the construction of a mountain village school for all of the children. Prior to this, only some children had access to education while others needed to leave their families in order to attend school.
